Kim Jong Un Visits China via Newly Opened Border Bridge as Pyongyang and Beijing Seek Closer Ties

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited the Chinese border city of Dandong on October 24, 2026, crossing the newly opened New Yalu River Bridge in a move that highlights renewed efforts to strengthen economic and diplomatic ties between North Korea and China.

According to South Korean government sources and Chinese state media, Kim met Wang Huning, one of China’s senior political leaders, during the visit. The two sides signaled support for expanding cooperation between the neighboring countries.

A Rare Visit Across the New Bridge

The New Yalu River Bridge connects Sinuiju in North Korea with Dandong in China’s Liaoning Province. The four-lane bridge stretches approximately three kilometers and was completed in 2014, but its opening was delayed for years while connecting roads and border facilities on the North Korean side remained unfinished.

The crossing officially opened in October 2026, creating a new route with the potential to improve the movement of goods and people between the two countries.

Kim’s visit was among the first high-profile signs of activity surrounding the newly opened crossing. During his stay in Dandong, he visited an automobile factory and a memorial honoring Chinese soldiers who fought alongside North Korea during the 1950–1953 Korean War.

North Korean state media later reported that Kim expressed a desire to advance the countries’ longstanding relationship and expand practical cooperation.

Why the Bridge Matters

China remains North Korea’s principal economic and diplomatic partner. The two countries share a long land border, and China accounts for most of North Korea’s officially recorded international trade.

The new bridge could help ease transportation constraints by allowing more efficient movement of heavy equipment, raw materials and energy supplies. Its opening may also support broader commercial exchanges after years of disruption linked to border restrictions and strained relations.

However, the bridge’s opening does not by itself guarantee a major increase in trade. The scale of future activity will depend on border procedures, infrastructure connections and the policies adopted by both governments.

North Korea and China’s Strategic Relationship

Kim’s visit comes as Pyongyang maintains close military ties with Russia while continuing to rely on China for substantial economic support.

Analysts have questioned how North Korea will balance these relationships. Stronger cooperation with Moscow has expanded Pyongyang’s strategic options, but geographic proximity and established commercial links continue to make Beijing an important partner.

The Dandong visit also took place around the anniversary of China’s entry into the Korean War in 1950. The conflict remains a central historical reference point in the relationship between the two countries.

What Comes Next?

The bridge provides both governments with an opportunity to expand cross-border commerce and reinforce political ties. Whether that opportunity translates into sustained economic growth will become clearer as trade and personnel movements develop in the coming months.

The visit also comes ahead of China’s hosting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen in November 2026. U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed interest in renewed dialogue with Kim, although no meeting between the two leaders has been confirmed.

For now, Kim’s crossing of the new bridge is a visible signal of continued engagement between Pyongyang and Beijing, rather than proof of a broader diplomatic breakthrough.
