Samsung Reports Record $80 Billion USD Quarterly Profit as AI Chip Demand Soars

Samsung Electronics has reported its highest-ever quarterly revenue and operating profit, as surging demand for artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure drives a boom in the global memory chip market.

The South Korean technology giant recorded approximately 146 billion USD in revenue and 80.1 billion USD in operating profit for the third quarter of 2026, covering July through September.

The results, announced on October 29, marked a historic milestone for the company. Operating profit surged nearly eightfold from a year earlier, highlighting the growing importance of AI-related semiconductors to Samsung’s business.

AI Memory Chips Fuel Samsung’s Record Results

Samsung’s semiconductor division was the main driver of its performance.

The Device Solutions division generated approximately 109.6 billion USD in revenue and 79.4 billion USD in operating profit during the quarter.

Its memory business benefited from strong demand for chips used in AI servers and data centers. Samsung also increased sales of high-bandwidth memory (HBM4), an advanced type of memory designed to transfer large volumes of data quickly between processors and memory.

HBM has become increasingly important as technology companies build more powerful AI systems. Alongside graphics processors and other computing components, these memory chips help AI accelerators handle the large workloads required to train and run AI models.

Samsung also reported stronger demand for server solid-state drives (SSDs), which are used to store and retrieve data in data centers.

The company expects investment in AI infrastructure to continue supporting demand for advanced memory products into 2027, although actual market conditions could change.

Samsung Faces an AI Chip Supply Crunch

Demand for advanced memory has also created capacity constraints across the industry.

Samsung said it would prioritize products for AI applications, including HBM, server DRAM and SSDs. It also plans to expand production and increase the supply of high-performance memory products.

The supply situation is important because advanced memory production requires substantial investment, specialized manufacturing capabilities and time to expand capacity.

Samsung’s results also reflect a broader shift in the technology industry. As companies spend more on AI infrastructure, memory chips have become a major source of revenue and profit for semiconductor manufacturers.

However, the industry’s strong performance raises questions about how long current levels of AI investment and memory demand can be sustained.

Galaxy Phones Face Rising Component Costs

Despite Samsung’s record overall results, its mobile business faced a more difficult quarter.

Samsung’s Mobile eXperience and Networks businesses generated approximately 28.1 billion USD in combined revenue, but recorded an operating loss of around 447 million USD. Higher component costs weighed on profitability, even as new flagship devices, including foldable phones, helped increase sales.

The contrast highlights an important challenge for Samsung: the same surge in demand for advanced components that benefits its semiconductor business can increase costs for other parts of the company.

Samsung said it would focus on premium smartphones, including the Galaxy S26 series and its foldable devices, while improving operational efficiency to protect profitability.

The company therefore faces two different pressures: meeting growing demand for AI chips while managing costs in its consumer electronics business.

Samsung Announces Major Shareholder Returns

Samsung also approved a cash dividend totaling approximately 22.4 billion USD for the third quarter.

The company said its remaining shareholder-return resources for 2026 could amount to between approximately 41 billion USD and 56 billion USD. The final amount and implementation details are scheduled to be determined by the board in January 2027.

Samsung’s strong earnings give it greater financial flexibility, but the company must also continue investing heavily in semiconductor production and next-generation technology.

It plans to spend approximately 62.9 billion USD on capital expenditure in 2026, including investment in semiconductor manufacturing and display facilities.

What Samsung’s Results Mean for the Global AI Race

Samsung’s earnings underline how the AI boom is reshaping the global technology industry. The race to develop more capable AI systems is creating strong demand not only for processors but also for the memory and storage products needed to support them.

South Korea is home to two major global memory chipmakers, Samsung Electronics and SK hynix. Both companies have reported record results amid the surge in AI-related demand.

Yet the outlook is not without risks. Semiconductor markets are cyclical, manufacturing capacity is expensive to expand, and future returns depend on continued investment in AI infrastructure.

For Samsung, the immediate challenge is to turn today’s demand for advanced memory into sustainable growth while maintaining competitiveness in smartphones and other consumer products.
